Database maintenance

Good morning, afternoon, and evening!

We're doing some database and other light server maintenance this weekend (upgrading the version of MySQL we use in particular, but also probably doing some CDN work.)

I expect all of this to be pretty invisible except for some small "couple of minute" blips as we switch between machines, but there's a chance you will notice something untoward. I'll keep an eye on comments as per usual.

Ta for now!

Fanvid Friday: Yellowjackets, Part Deux

Once upon a time, there was a place called the Wilderness.... )

My Comments: With the announcement that the fourth season is to be its last, I ended up watching some Yellowjackets fanvids that were made recently. This one in particular caught my eye because of its use of a very somber cover of "Like A Prayer" by Madonna which gives the eerie and devastating atmosphere of the show itself. It does feature scenes spanning across all three seasons, though not entirely spoilery unless you look very hard. I like the way the vidder chose to focus on the wilderness and the girls, and the horrors they went through and what they transformed into because of it. It's one of the many different parts of what makes this show, flaws and all, so captivating.

Fannish Stuff

On the Critical Role front, a friend has sent me some very specific spoilers about last night's episode as well as timestamps to avoid, so I'm going to try to watch it again this weekend but this time going in prepared. When I watch this time, I'm going to very carefully fast-forward through some scenes to try to avoid being set off again like I was when I was watching it live. Because gods only know the last thing I need is another accidental panic attack.

We'll see how it goes?

I've gotta admit, one of the biggest things that annoys me about Critical Role is their refusal to add content warnings of any type even now that they're prerecording. It made sense when they were properly airing live prior to 2020, because that just wasn't possible, but now? It would help a lot of people to at least have an option to know in advance that an episode was going to include common triggers. They gave warnings for the Divergence miniseries, so it's definitely possible for them to do. They just don't do it most of the time.

Let's see...

I finally managed to get my Yuletide sign-up done earlier this afternoon. It took a lot longer than I was expecting, but I got it in a few hours before the deadline so that I still had time to go back and make a few small edits before they closed. So that's a relief at least. I'm having a few regrets about not trimming down my list of offers a bit more than I did, but that happens every year, so it's not exactly something new.

The Dragon Age Reverse Bang's deadline is Sunday, so my artist and I are both hurrying to get everything finished. My brain's a bit mush right now despite me napping after work, because A. I slept like crap and B. I think that I might be coming down with something, so I think that I'm going to go to bed in a bit so that I can plan on getting up early and curling up with my laptop to spend tomorrow writing until I get this ever-growing monster of a fic done.

Dear Yuletide Writer(s),

Just to note: this year's requests include the Gargoyles cartoon, the movie Home Alone (1990), the Hornblower TV movies, the Peacemakers television show (2003), the book Stealing Fire by Jo Graham, the movie Titanic (1997), the movie The Wild Robot (2024), and the webcomic The Witch Wolf.

First of all, relax! I'm far from being picky, and I can pretty much guarantee that I'll love whatever you decide to write me. These are nothing but guidelines for you to take to heart or ignore to your heart's content. Also, hey! You're writing me fic! In a tiny(ish) fandom that I adore! That's automatically a good reason for me to love you, no matter what. So, please, keep that in mind. Trust me, you can pretty much do no wrong. ♥

That said, I thought that I'd elaborate a bit on my eight requests in case, like me, you're the type of person who likes to have something to work with. If you're not that type of person, it's totally fine with me if you skip over anything/everything that I've included in this letter. Feel free to use and/or ignore as much of this as you want.

Okay, yeah, I think that I may no longer be watching Critical Role.

ETA: In retrospect, I was definitely having a mild panic attack for a while there, so I've apparently found a fun new trigger. A friend is sending me some very specific spoilers and timestamps about last night's episode, so I'm going to try it again when I can go in prepared. It's not as bad as it initially seemed, but the way it was handled was definitely... not great.

Fannish Stuff

I swear that it feels like time's speeding by the last few days, to the point where I haven't been able to get anything done. It's because I've been having to nap in the afternoons to make up for my lack of sleep at night, so it's not like I don't know why I feel like I have no spare time, but still.

D&D starts in about ten minutes, so that's going to take up the right of my night. Tomorrow, I have to finish up my Yuletide letter and sign-up whether my brain likes it or not. It's taking forever because I'm requesting multiple new fandoms this year, so I'm having to write those sections of the letter from scratch, but I'm running out of time so I've gotta get it finished.

Then I desperately need to finish my fic for the Dragon Age Reverse Bang by Saturday at the latest. It's due on Sunday, and both my artist and I are scrambling to finish up. The fic's one of those ones that decided to keep growing and growing on me, as isn't uncommon with that fandom, which hasn't exactly helped.

Come on, brain. Cooperate for just a few days. Please?

AWS outage

DW is seeing some issues due to today's Amazon outage. For right now it looks like the site is loading, but it may be slow. Some of our processes like notifications and journal search don't appear to be running and can't be started due to rate limiting or capacity issues. DW could go down later if Amazon isn't able to improve things soon, but our services should return to normal when Amazon has cleared up the outage.

Edit: all services are running as of 16:12 CDT, but there is definitely still a backlog of notifications to get through.

Edit 2: and at 18:20 CDT everything's been running normally for about the last hour.

Movie Review: V/H/S/Halloween

The latest installment of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise was released this month. I really enjoyed the previous movie, V/H/S/Beyond, which was more or less scifi based, and I was pleasantly surprised that they had another one coming out soon after that one had been released, this time appropriately themed around Halloween. After having finally watched it, here are my thoughts.

V/H/S/Halloween )

I wonder if the franchise can turn this into a trend of doing holiday themed installments. Obviously Halloween was very appropriate, but I would love for V/H/S to do something similar with other holidays, like Thanksgiving or Christmas, or even Hallmark holidays like Valentine's Day, Mother's/Father's Day, etc. There are so great opportunities for horror stories with those.

The end of an era...

Those of you who've been around for ages probably remember when I worked at what I not-so-lovingly called the Restaurant of FAIL when I first moved to Maryland. There was a beer & wine store nearby that doubled as a small bar that I spent a lot of time at back then, and even once I moved further north I still tried to go there from time-to-time until I, you know, stopped having a car. Even now, whenever I happened to be down in the area for a doctor's appointment or whatever, I'd try to stop by since it's within walking distance of the metro.

Anyway, I just saw that they made a post on Facebook on Thursday saying that they're permanently closing tomorrow. Three days' notice. That's it. Considering that very much is not something the Gilly's that I knew would do, I quickly did some googling to figure out what on earth was going on. And, well, I found this Reddit post from back in February. Which explains a lot.

From what I can tell, without any warning they fired the entire management team (some of whom had been there for 10-15 years) for nepotism purposes, which pissed off a lot of the staff and caused many of them to quit. Then a big chunk of the long-time customers stopped visiting after that as well, because the staff is what kept people coming more than anything. And, uh, it doesn't seem to have ended well for them.

Fanvid Friday: Gao Tu/Shen Wenlang (A/B/O Desire)

An Alpha and an Omega pretending to be a Beta..... )

My Comments: Oh, these idiots. And I say that with utter affection. When I got into A/B/O Desire I knew I was in for quite a ride, this being an Omegaverse drama and all, but I didn't expect to get so attached to the most tragic pairing of the series. Both Gao Tu and Shen Wenlang are stubborn in their own ways, not properly communicating with one another, denial of feelings or possible reciprocation of, misunderstandings abound, and yet they're by far the most compelling pairing in my eyes because of it. These two fanvids I chose today mostly focusing on the tragic element of them not talking to one another, but also the yearning between both of them. It just makes you want to shake them both and yell, "just talk to each other!"

Note: Turn on closed captioning for the dialogue used in the fanvids.

LJ/DW origins.

Taken from [community profile] thefridayfive:

01. How long ago did you join LJ (or DW)?
I joined LiveJournal in 2003, back when they had invite codes. I joined DW in 2012 when many LJ users were starting to migrate, or at least backup their journals, due to a lot of issues concerning the LJ ownership and handling of things, and I wanted to keep in touch with those on my LJ flist. I didn't do anything with my DW account until 2022 when I finally transferred my journal entries to DW and deleted my old LJ account.

02. How did you find out about LJ (or DW)?
I can't really remember with LJ, my sister had an account before I did (she helped get the invite code for me to join back then) and I would search randomly and read random journal entries and things, so I'm sure it was from word-of-mouth that way. With DW it was through LJ, since it was created as an alternative solution in case LJ went down.

03. If someone introduced you to LJ (or DW), is s/he still on your friends list?
Yes.

04. Have you introduced anyone to LJ (or DW)?
Only people online that I know from other platforms, not in real life.

05. Is your LJ (or DW) public or friends only, and why?
Mostly public, I keep things regarding my personal life and some other things that discuss serious things behind locked entries, but otherwise it's relatively public. Although I have been reconsidering this due to the invasive rise of AI scrapping.

For Sale: Nintendo Switch games

My financial situation is even more precarious than usual thanks to some news I got this week, so I'm desperately trying to raise money yet again. I'm going to try to make it to my storage unit this weekend, so I might have several virtual garage sale posts going up, but for the time being this is the only one as I'm running out of things that I have in the hotel with me to try to sell.

Would anyone be interested in any of the following Nintendo Switch games?

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! (example on Amazon)
Spyro Reignited Trilogy (example on Amazon)
TemTem (example on Amazon)

For payment, I have CashApp ($Settiai), PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle (nancy.lynn.foster@gmail.com).

If you're interested but know someone who might be, please point them my way.
